Find balance by adding creativity

I’ve always loved new school supplies, office supplies, and ART supplies.

I’ve been MIA since New Year’s Eve (on my blog anyway.) Why? Well, because I believe in balance.

At the end of 2022 I committed to myself that I would post at least one blog post per week in 2023. I accomplished that and actually loved every second of it. That being said, I don’t have the same goal for 2024… and my reason my surprise you. Writing is just one of my favorite “creative” outlets but it isn’t my only one.

Mid-2023 one of my very best friend’s asked me if I would host a podcast with her. We’ve been told over the years that we would make funny TV and things of that nature, and perhaps had even floated the idea of a podcast. But when she asked me this time, it was a serious conversation about a project she was determined to do and so… enter our podcast that we launched on January 18th, 2024. Our podcast is titled Twin Time and we release new episodes every other week on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify. While that doesn’t add an insane amount of time or work to my plate, it does require a certain level of preparation and creativity. So, that is part one of the creative energy being used differently than 2023.

Part two is that I’ve decided to get back into the visual arts. Taking it all the way back to 5th grade, I was introduced to printmaking in school and ended up winning a little competition for the Winter Concert Program Cover. Then in 7th or 8th grade we had an ad design competition for a fictional mail delivery company and again I won that. So once I got into high school I spent most of my visual arts time in the printmaking world. I didn’t stop there, once I was in college I continued in a similar vein and was just two credits shy — if I remember correctly — of completing my visual arts minor, but alas I instead accepted a job opportunity and graduated a quarter early… and basically never looked back. But hey, why not re-introduce something I once loved in 2024? So, for my birthday I received quite a bit of printmaking supplies from my mom and when I have time (and my little one isn’t needing me) I am putting creative energy into an outlet I used to really enjoy.

All that to say, I still LOVE writing and do intend to show up on here more than I have so far this year, but I believe in balance and not over doing it. I’m still a busy mom with an extremely active toddler, I’m still digital marketing, and I’m now also doing two more creative “things” than I was last year… so I want to make sure I am enjoying the pieces that are meant to be enjoyed, and not imposing too much unnecessary stress on myself with needless deadlines. And of course, as the youth say, life is still life-ing… so there’s got to be room for all the ups and downs of that too. 🙂

While I don’t believe in any one specific outlet as we are all so very unique with such varying interests, I highly suggest taking a moment to reflect on creative outlets that once filled you with joy and seeing how you could reintroduce even a little bit of that creative energy into your life… you might be surprised how balanced the added activity makes you feel.
